Landsat MSS band numbering โ why does it differ across satellites?
Plain English (default view) โ short, conversational, lightly seasoned with science
๐ฌ Scientific / formula (revealed on click) โ markdown + $$โฆ$$ ok
MSS flew on Landsat 1/2 *and* Landsat 4/5 โ but the bands got renumbered. Same wavelengths, new numbers: - ๐ฉ **Green** (0.5โ0.6 ยตm) โ L1/2: B4 โ L4/5: **B1** - ๐ฅ **Red** (0.6โ0.7 ยตm) โ L1/2: B5 โ L4/5: **B2** - ๐ช **NIR-1** (0.7โ0.8 ยตm) โ L1/2: B6 โ L4/5: **B3** - ๐ช **NIR-2** (0.8โ1.1 ยตm) โ L1/2: B7 โ L4/5: **B4** โ ๏ธ MSS has **no blue band** โ visible spectrum starts at green. That's why MSS imagery can't be made into natural-color composites.
