**NDVI** (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) is the most widely used VI. It is a simple numerical indicator that assesses whether the observed target contains live green vegetation. - Developed by **Rouse et al. (1974)** for AVHRR imagery of the US Great Plains. - The "normalized difference" form keeps values bounded and reduces some illumination effects.
